Neutral UV filters absorb the very short ultra-violet wavelenghts, which - especially in the mountains, in high altitudes and over long streches of water - produce a misty background caused by atmospheric stray light. Digital cameras have a lower UV sensitivity, but with some cameras the appearance of color fringes can be reduced.
