Power & Reliability
The EL-5 Ver. 2 has a guide number of 196.9' at ISO 100 (200mm position) with the ability to recycle to full power in just 1.2 seconds and the potential for up to 350 full power flashes on a single battery charge. It runs on an included rechargeable LP-EL lithium-ion battery pack using a separately available LC-E6 battery charger. Users can also fire up the flash continuously up to 95 times and achieve a notable number of 2450 flashes at minimum power. With the same high-speed charging circuits as other EL-series models and its included lithium-ion battery, the EL-5 Ver. 2 achieves recharge times of 0.1 to 1.2 sec, and even without a fan, offers impressive flash counts.
Canon's E-TTL II
The EL-5 Ver. 2 is compatible with Canon's E-TTL II / E-TTL auto exposure technology. When combined with a compatible Canon camera (EOS cameras equipped with a multi-purpose shoe), TTL will utilize the subject distance and other information that automatically modifies flash power, resulting in accurate flash exposure regardless of subject size, reflectance, or photographic composition.
Custom Flash Modes
Custom flash modes facilitate changing flash settings on-the-fly. Instantly switch between E-TTL auto flash, manual, and individual values, which is extremely helpful in weddings and situations where ambient light changes frequently. This versatility can also link the flash's C1, C2, and C3 to the camera's C1, C2, and C3 (on compatible cameras), resulting in the recall of the flash's settings via the camera's shooting mode. By registering the flash settings in advance, the flash mode is directly switched using the camera's shooting mode setting.
Still Intuitive
Retaining the same control dial, joystick, and high-definition LCD screen from the original EL-5, the EL-5 Ver. 2 stays familiar and intuitive. When used with a compatible EOS R-series camera, users can assign flash functions to the control ring for quick flash group control and multi-flash shooting. In addition, the EL-5 Ver. 2 works with the free Canon Camera Connect smartphone app for quick remote setting adjustments, such as flash intensity, flash compensation, sync settings, multi-flash control, and FEB.
App Control
Useful for multi-flash setups, placing the flash in hard-to-reach spots, and shooting with a limited number of assistants, the Canon's Camera Connect app allows users to control the wireless flash settings, shutter release, and more. Use the app to adjust the light intensity while checking the shooting results on the smartphone screen. Operate and configure settings from your smartphone without touching your camera or flash.
Flash Coverage
The flash head offers an excellent zoom range of 24-200mm, which is expanded to 14mm with the use of the wide-angle diffusion panel. Automatic or manual zooming of the flash head can match the coverage of 24mm-200mm lenses on a full-frame camera (equivalent to 15mm-125mm+ lenses on an APS-C sensor camera). Use the additional 14mm wide panel for wider-angle flash coverage when working beyond 24mm.
LED Modeling Light
A built-in continuous LED modeling lamp will help you preview lighting coverage and shadows. This translates into a useful tool whether you're using the lamp for checking where shadows will fall on a subject or to aid AF-assist. Set brightness at five different levels and get easy onboard control. Furthermore, the EL-5 Ver. 2 allows checking its flash effect when using multiple units.
Multi-Function Shoe Connection
A multi-function foot connector enables advanced communication on your multi-function shoe-equipped cameras, allowing integrated control between camera and speedlite. Important note: this EL-5 Ver. 2 model cannot be mounted or used on Canon cameras with other accessory shoe types. It can only be shoe-mounted to Canon EOS mirrorless cameras with Canon's multi-function shoe design. It cannot be attached to EOS digital SLR cameras or to EOS R-series cameras using the original 5-pin hot shoe connector.
Other Highlights
Even more, the EL-5 Ver. 2 enables superior coordination between the camera and the flash unit (when compared to previous Canon Speedlites) to improve the "menu direct" function, customize button function, and custom flash modes. Gold-plated terminals in the shoe improve connection quality, with checked installation status, to ensure reliable connection to various cameras, such as the Canon EOS R3, R7, R10, and R6 Mark II.
Further Protection
This second version also provides dust- and moisture-resistance. In addition to a rubber seal around the shoe-locking mechanism, the EL-5 Ver. 2 ensures airtightness with extra sealing applied to its exterior joints. Even when shooting under difficult conditions, the EL-5 Ver. 2 prevents dust and moisture from entering the unit's 5.5 x 4.9 x 3.2" body. Finally, the EL-5 Ver. 2 weighs 1.3 lb with its included battery.
