This lens offers an extreme wide-angle view with unique fisheye distortion, perfect for dynamic photography and videography in action sports, landscapes, and architecture. Its ultra-wide zoom design provides both circular and diagonal fisheye effects. The lens is compact and lightweight with superior image quality, thanks to specialised optics. It features close-focus capabilities, fast and quiet autofocus, and supports VR content creation. It's also weather-resistant and accepts drop-in filters for enhanced creative control.
Combining a huge field of view with distinct fisheye rendering, the Canon RF 7-14mm f/2.8-3.5 L Fisheye STM is an ultra-wide zoom for creating striking, dynamic photos and videos. The first fisheye lens for the RF series, this lens brings an immensely wide 190° angle of view, both circular and diagonal coverage depending on focal length and format, and a host of convenient new design details for working with the unique lens.
Ultra-wide-angle fisheye lens offers truly unique rendering with strong distortion that is a perfect partner to action sports and action subjects, as well as a dynamic option for landscape, nature, underwater, astrophotography, and architecture applications.
Optical design includes five ultra-low dispersion glass elements and two aspherical elements; these specialized optics promote high color accuracy and sharpness along with a compact, lightweight construction.
Relative to conventional focal length zooms, this fisheye zoom's change in focal lengths also affects the fisheye distortion and frame coverage.
At the 7mm position on a full-frame camera, this is a fully circular fisheye lens with a 190° angle of view. At the 14mm position on a full-frame camera, this is a diagonal, frame-filling fisheye with a 180° angle of view.
When used with APS-C-format cameras, there is a 'C' position on the zoom ring at approximately 8.7mm, which indicates the point at which vignetting will disappear and this lens will fully cover the sensor area. Between 7mm and 8.7mm, the fully circular image will not fit within the frame but there will be significant vignetting.
Making best use of the unique traits of a fisheye lens, close-up shooting highlights the distinct distortion and sense of space the bulbous, 180-190° angle of view rendering provides.
This lens has a minimum focusing distance of just 5.9"—meaning the closest working distance is approximately 2" from the front of the lens, allowing you to place the lens right next to subjects to highlight and exaggerate shapes, textures, and other small details while the background details remain in the frame but curve away with a distinct fisheye effect.
The fisheye effect is equally striking and versatile for video creators; the immense depth of field, unique distortion, and broad angle of view make for a unique tool to render singular subjects in space.
Unique among fisheye lenses with a bulbous front element, this lens's unique ability to accept drop-in filters makes it compatible with Canon's own variable ND filter to help better control exposure while recording.
Focus breathing is also virtually non-existent, thanks to a rear focus design, which helps maintain a consistent composition while racking focus. Also, the lens has internal focus and internal zoom for easier use on a gimbal.
Using a lead-screw type STM and the same position-detecting sensor from Nano USM technology, this lens's autofocus is fast, accurate, and responsive for photo while also offering smooth and quiet performance that benefits video applications.
The extreme angle of view of the lens also lends itself to 2D monoscopic VR content and the lens is fully supported by the Canon EOS VR System application for VR image creation.
One of the most unique design details of this lens is the use of Canon's rear drop-in filter system, which debuted with their Drop-In Filter Mount Adapter EF-EOS R.
This filter system accommodates the bulbous, protruding front lens element and enables working with a switchable filter system in the rear of the lens. This differs from cut gel filter holders since filters can be switched without removing the lens.
This system uses self-contained mounted filters that slide directly into the rear of the lens; a clear filter is included with the lens and optional Drop-In Variable Neutral Density Filter A and Drop-In Circular Polarizing Filter A are also available.
