Features

Resolution Meets Speed

Blurring the line between high-resolution imaging and professional-speed performance, the Sony a7R VI combines the highest resolution sensor ever featured in an a7-series body with powerful 30fps continuous shooting, advanced AI-driven autofocus, and impressive 8K video recording capabilities. Designed as a true all-round professional hybrid camera, the a7R VI is built for photographers and creators working across portraiture, landscapes, commercial work, editorial, wildlife, sports, and high-end video production.

66.8MP Full-Frame Exmor RS Sensor

At the heart of the a7R VI is a newly developed 66.8MP full-frame Exmor RS back-illuminated stacked CMOS sensor — the highest resolution sensor ever featured in an a7-series camera. The fully stacked sensor design delivers dramatically faster readout speeds, helping minimise rolling shutter while enabling more responsive autofocus, exposure calculation, and subject tracking performance.

The BSI sensor structure improves low-light performance, dynamic range, and shadow detail while maintaining exceptional sharpness and resolution. Combined with copper wiring technology and Sony’s latest processing engine, the camera produces richly detailed 14-bit stills with impressive colour depth and a dynamic range up to 16 stops.

The native ISO range spans ISO 100–32000 and can be expanded to ISO 50–102400 for greater flexibility across different lighting conditions.

BIONZ XR2 Processing and AI Autofocus

A new BIONZ XR2 processing engine works alongside an advanced AI processing unit to deliver significantly improved speed, subject recognition, and autofocus intelligence. The system can recognise and track humans, animals, birds, vehicles, and more with greater precision and reliability, even during fast movement or unpredictable action.

Improved AI-based auto exposure and white balance processing also help deliver more accurate skin tones, colour reproduction, and exposure consistency in difficult lighting conditions, including backlit scenes and harsh sunlight.

30fps Continuous Shooting with Pre-Capture

Despite its extremely high resolution, the a7R VI can shoot continuously at up to 30fps with full AF and AE tracking, making it far more versatile for wildlife, sports, and action photography than previous R-series models.

For the first time in an a7R body, Sony has introduced Pre-Capture functionality, allowing the camera to begin buffering images while the shutter button is half-pressed. Once fully pressed, those moments before the shutter release are also saved, helping capture unpredictable action more reliably.

The new Speed Boost function allows users to instantly switch to faster frame rates using a custom button, making it easier to react quickly during changing shooting situations.

8.5-Stop In-Body Image Stabilisation

The revised 5-axis in-body image stabilisation system provides up to 8.5 stops of compensation in the centre of the frame and up to 7 stops toward the edges. A high-performance gyro sensor and improved stabilisation algorithms help deliver sharper handheld images and smoother video recording.

For video creators, Active IS mode adds additional electronic stabilisation for even smoother handheld footage, especially when paired with compatible Sony OSS lenses.

8K Video and Professional Recording Features

The a7R VI is also a highly capable cinema and video production tool, supporting detailed 8K recording alongside advanced colour and workflow options for professional creators. Fast sensor readout speeds help reduce rolling shutter effects, while AI-assisted autofocus improves subject tracking during video recording.

Multi-Aspect recording modes, advanced codecs, and professional monitoring tools make the a7R VI suitable for demanding hybrid production environments.

Pixel Shift Multi Shooting

For ultimate detail and colour accuracy, Pixel Shift Multi Shooting allows the camera to capture 4 or 16 shifted exposures that can later be combined into images containing approximately 265.8MP of information. This mode is ideal for product photography, artwork reproduction, architecture, and commercial studio applications where maximum detail matters.

Additional multi-image HDR and Noise Reduction modes can combine multiple RAW frames to improve dynamic range and reduce visible noise.

Professional Body Design and Connectivity

The a7R VI features an improved body design with refined ergonomics, enhanced handling, and improved battery performance for professional daily use. Dual card slots, extensive wireless connectivity, advanced customisation options, and a high-resolution electronic viewfinder support demanding production workflows across both photography and video.
