This camera is specially designed for astrophotography, allowing you to capture red nebulae and constellations with precision. It features an IR-cut filter for perfect hydrogen-alpha wavelengths, ensuring detailed and vibrant celestial imagery. The High Res Shot mode produces high-quality images, even correcting star motion. Custom modes and astro filters enhance your astrophotography experience, while the compact, elegant design and advanced video capabilities make it versatile for both photo and video shooting.

Features

Dedicated to Astrophotography

A purpose-built camera for astrophotography, the OM-3 ASTRO, from OM SYSTEM

A specialized Micro Four Thirds mirrorless body featuring adjusted optical characteristics that enable recording red nebulae, constellations, and other nighttime phenomena.

Capture Hydrogen-Alpha Wavelengths

The key distinction of this specialized camera is an IR-cut filter that has been placed in front of the sensor, achieving 100% transmission of Ha (hydrogen-alpha) wavelengths. This, coupled with the TruePix X processor, allows the camera to record accurate detail, shape, and color of diffuse nebulae and other celestial objects.

Image Stacking and Hi Res Shot Mode

The High Res Shot mode is a computational function that combines information from multiple, sequentially recorded frames and composites it in-camera into a single high-resolution image. For the OM-3 ASTRO, the Handheld High Res Shot mode is the preferred mode, even when working from a tripod or equatorial mount, to capture and composite 12 separate frames into 50MP image with reduced image noise, no subject blur, and greater detail.

Since the position of each image is matched when compositing, this handheld mode will also correct the diurnal motion of stars from a tripod or other star misalignment or tracking errors caused by an equatorial mount.

Custom Modes and Other ASTRO Features

Preprogrammed COLOR settings make it easy to get started photographing astro scenes and starry landscapes right away—the COLOR1 setting optimizes color and camera settings for astrophotography scenes, like when photographing nebulae, and the COLOR2 setting is optimized for starry landscape scenes.

The C1, C2, and C3 custom modes have also been preset for different shooting situations—C1 is a frame stacking mode for astrophotography, C2 is a frame stacking mode for starry landscapes, and C3 is the handheld mode for starry landscapes.

Other key features already featured in the standard OM-3 are greatly beneficial to the specialized needs of astrophotography, including Starry Sky AF, Live Composite, the digital level, support for power delivery via USB while shooting, and a Night View mode.

Astrophotography Accessory Filters

Beyond the modified camera, there are also a pair of optional specialized filters to enhance the quality and clarity of astro and starry sky photos. Both of these filter are body mount filters, too, and can be inserted within the lens mount to make them usable with any attached lens, including fisheyes and ultra-wides:

  • The BMF-LPC01 Light Suppression Filter cuts stray light from artificial light sources, like street lamps, for more vividness and clarity when photographing near cities.
  • The BMF-SE01 Soft Filter can slightly blur and soften the point light rendering of stars to make them appear more significant within the frame.

Based on the Original OM-3

The OM-3 delivers flagship-level performance, customizable creative tools, and robust video capabilities, making it a great camera for a range of astro and starry sky scenes. Adopting the 20MP Stacked BSI Live MOS MFT Sensor, TruePic X engine, and the 1053 AF points native to the OM-1 Mark II, this compact system proves to be a giant in capabilities.

Timeless Elegance and Innovative Design

The OM-3 prides itself on conserving the timeless elegance of the SLR camera. Its design repurposes the traditional dials to provide valuable access to customizable tools, such as a creative dial that allows easy transition between custom profiles, an intuitive button that unifies computational features such as Live ND and GND, focus stacking, and more.

With easy access to the computational photography button, the user is allowed to harness a wide array of creative tools, such as capturing light trails free from urban light pollution or combining various focus points to capture the wonders and details hidden in the world of macro photography.

5-Axis Image Stabilization

The OM SYSTEM 5-axis image stabilization provides up to 6.5 shutter speed stops of compensation for the center and 5.5 stops for the corner. When paired with compatible lenses, the camera supports Sync IS delivering even more powerful image stabilization at up to 7.5 shutter speed stops at the center and 6.5 stops at the corner, ensuring blur-free images in a variety of scenarios.

Video Features

Also optimized for video creators, the OM-3 allows for 4K video recording at up to 60p, seamless mode switching, heat management for extended recording, and new OM-Cinema video profiles. The dedicated video dial makes switching between still, video, and S&Q mode a breeze, easily recording slow or quick motion videos at frame rates ranging from 1 to 120 fps.
